Dr. Spurr joined the University of Saskatchewan (USask) College of Nursing in 2006 and is currently a tenured Professor. She has over 25 years of nursing experience working in a variety of settings including acute care pediatrics, home care, and public health. Dr. Spurr’s professional practice is focused in two areas: Promoting wellness and hope in families who have a child with a life-limiting /life-threatening illness including a specific interest in type 2 diabetes; and, Enhancing student experiences in post-secondary education through the integration of interprofessional education (IPE) and/or the promotion of wellness. Both focuses have a common goal to promote health and wellness of individuals and their families.
Dr. Spurr’s career highlight was the development of the “Caring for Kids Where They Live” program. This interprofessional pediatric clinical environment involves bringing together students from the colleges of Nursing, Dentistry, and Medicine in order to build capacity and improve the standard of pediatric care. For her work on this program, Dr. Spurr was awarded the Leadership in Nursing Practice by the Saskatchewan Registered Nursing Association and Canada Health Infoway. The pinnacle of these awards is the InTouch Health Outstanding Telemedicine Achievement Award; which recognized the program for its extensive clinical and research experience with Indigenous adolescents and families. This experience led to a broad awareness and understanding of the inequalities that exist for all Indigenous peoples.
