Shannan Grant, RD, MSc, PhD, is an Associate Professor and Graduate Program Coordinator, Department of Applied Human Nutrition, Faculty of Professional Studies, at Mount Saint Vincent University. She is also an Affiliate Scientist, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, IWK Health, and Adjunct Professor, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Faculty of Medicine, Dalhousie University. Shannan's work focuses on development, implementation, and evaluation of evidence-based wellness, nutrition and food interventions, geared towards populations experiencing chronic disease, including diabetes, cardiovascular disease, infectious disease, and persistent pain. Her work is influenced and guided by several frameworks, often intersecting, including shared-decision making, self-management, biomedical model, intersectionality (social determinants of health), feminism, and critical pedagogy. Through her work, Shannan aims to co-create accessible education, treatments, and programs, that are community- informed or led.
Shannan works with individuals and groups as a health and wellness coach, and trains healthcare providers is coaching knowledge and skills. An original and current faculty member of Health and Wellness Coaching Certificate Program, originally offered through York University, now MacMaster University, Continuing Education, and a current member of Dr. Lee Baggley and Associates, Shannan brings decades of counseling, communication, and conflict resolution experience, aimed at supporting wellness and realtionship sustainability inside and outside the workplace.
As a recipient of several awards for her contributions to patient care, communication and education (e.g. The Alumni Early Career Teaching Award [2021], Diabetes Canada Canadian Diabetes in Pregnancy Study Group Award of Excellence [2020]), Shannan is a passionate believer that education activities inform research and practice and vice versa. Most recently, she received one of IWK Health's Medical, Dental, Scientific & Affiliated Staff (MDSAS) Leadership Awards, that will allow her to complete a Women in Leadership Program, offered through Rotman, University of Toronto, to improve her skills in supporting and advocating for women leaders. She is also a member og the Alexa McDonough Institute for Women, Gender, and Social Justice (AMI), and is co-editing a special edition of the Atlantis: Critical Studies in Gender, Culture & Social Justice called "Healing is an act of communion: Critical perspectives on women's health, wellness and disease".
