Dr. Durnwald is an Associate Professor of OB/GYN and a Maternal Fetal Medicine specialist with clinical and research interests focused on diabetes in pregnancy. She is the Director of the Perinatal Diabetes Program at the University of Pennsylvania and High Risk Services at the Helen O. Dickens Center for Women’s Health. She has a strong interest in conducting clinical trials and prospective cohorts to elucidate the interplay among altered glucose metabolism and perinatal outcomes. She has served as site-PI for two NICHD funded multicenter trials: 1) MOMPOD Study, recently completed, evaluating the safety and efficacy of metformin added to insulin for the treatment of type 2 diabetes in pregnancy and 2) SPAN Study, Time Aim evaluating the optimal timing of delivery for patients with gestational diabetes. Her personal work centers around the use of continuous glucose monitors and pregnancy outcomes. She recently completed the GLAM study, a large prospective cohort of 760 participants using continuous glucose monitors (CGM) to better characterize glycemic profiles indicative of a diagnosis of gestational diabetes and adverse perinatal outcomes independent of a GDM diagnosis and is a site-PI for an upcoming trial evaluating the use of CGM in pregnant individuals with type 2 diabetes.
