Dr. Abhinav Sharma is an assistant professor in the Division of Cardiology at the McGill University Health Centre (MUHC). He is a Fonds de Recherche du Québec Sante (FRQS) Junior 2 clinician-scientist which protects 50% of his research time. His research program focuses on the clinical population of type 2 diabetes (T2DM) and heart failure (HF), thereby aligning with his clinical training (Advanced Heart Failure – Stanford University). He has extensive experience in large data modelling and machine learning (ML) approaches through his research fellowship and PhD training. His research program focuses on: 1) identifying sex-specific HF risk models using clinical variables and proteomic approaches in patients with T2DM (funded CIHR 2021-23); 2) Utilize ML approaches to identify phenotypes in patients with T2DM (funded Heart/Stroke 2022-27); and 3) Utilize artificial intelligence to create new digital biomarkers from wearable devices to screen for T2DM (funded MEDTEQ 2021-24).
Abhinav defended his PhD (06/2019) on 'Identifying causes of death in patient with diabetes'. He completed a research fellowship (Duke University -05/2015-17) on biomarker expression in heart failure. He gained experience in large data modelling and machine learning (ML) approaches through this fellowship and PhD training. He went to Stanford University to complete a fellowship in heart failure (06/2017-18). He continued as a Postgraduate Visiting Scholar (06/2018-19). He has published 170 peer reviewed articles. He has directly mentored more than 16 graduate and medical students/residents, whom have published 16 articles as first author under his supervision. As first/senior/corresponding author, Dr. Sharma’s highest IF for original research: JACC 2019 IF 24 and Diabetes Care 2022, IF 19.1. His highest IF for review Circulation 2021, IF 39.9. His highest IF for editorials is Lancet 2022 IF 202. He has won a total of $3,454,397 in funding as NPI and $513,633 as co-PI.
