Dr. Shields is a full professor in the School of Kinesiology, a research associate in the Department of Psychology and a researcher within the Centre of Lifestyle Studies at Acadia University. Broadly, his research examines the psychosocial determinants and consequences of engaging in health behaviour. In particular, Dr. Shields’ work focuses on how dyadic relationships (e.g., Dr. – patient; coach – athlete; parent – child) impact the health and health behaviour of those within that relationship. The end goal of his scholarly work is not only the creation of a better understanding of these processes, but the application of this understanding to change behaviours, and improve practice in health and exercise settings. To this end, Dr. Shields has worked on multiple provincial and national initiatives aimed at improving exercise counseling in health care, including being a primary author of the Building Competency in Diabetes Education: Physical Activity and Exercise Resource Manual. Dr. Shields has served on the National Advisory Council of Exercise is Medicine, and is the former president of the Canadian Society for Psychomotor Learning and Sport Psychology. Dr. Shields’ work has received funding from CIHR, SSHRC, Heart and Stroke Canada and the Lawson Foundation. He is proud to say that he is a previous winner of the Brian Dufton Memorial Manuscript Award (2011), and the Diabetes Care Program of Nova Scotia Dedicated Leader Award (2016).
