Anna Gloyn is currently Professor of Pediatrics (Endocrinology) Genetics at Stanford University. Anna leads the Translational Genomics of Diabetes Lab at Stanford which is an inter-disciplinary team of basic and clinical scientists with shared interests in using molecular genetics as a tool to uncover novel biology. The team use a variety of different approaches to address important challenges in the field, which range from studies that work genome wide to those which are focused on specific genes and even precise nucleotide changes to understand their impact on pancreatic islet biology and precision medicine for diabetes.
Anna completed her DPhil at the University of Oxford under the supervision of the late Professor Robert C Turner. Her post-doctoral training was carried out at the University of Exeter under the mentorship of Professors Andrew Hattersley & Sian Ellard and at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia under the mentorship of Professor Franz Matschinsky. In 2004 she returned to Oxford University with a Diabetes UK RD Lawrence Career Development Fellowship and established her own lab focused on understanding beta-cell function through the investigation of genetic variants causally implicated in monogenic diabetes. In 2011 she was awarded a prestigious Wellcome Senior Fellowship in Basic Biomedical Science which she successfully renewed in 2016. Anna was made Professor of Molecular Genetics & Metabolism in 2014. In February 2019 Anna joined the faculty at Stanford University as Professor of Pediatrics.
Anna's work has been recognised by multiple international awards including the European Association for the Study of Diabetes (EASD) Rising Star Award (2005), Minkowski Award (2014), Diabetes UK RD Lawrence Award (2009), Dorothy Hodgkin Award (2019) and the American Diabetes Association Outstanding Scientific Achievement Award (2022).
