Dr. Mark A. Herman holds the E.L. Wagner, M.D., Chair in Internal Medicine and serves as Chief of the Section of Endocrinology, Diabetes, and Metabolism within the Department of Medicine at Baylor College of Medicine. He earned his bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from Princeton University and his medical degree from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School. Dr. Herman completed his residency in Internal Medicine at UT Southwestern, followed by a fellowship in Endocrinology, Diabetes, and Metabolism at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Joslin Diabetes Clinic, and Harvard Medical School. Dr. Herman has made important contributions to metabolic disease research, notably identifying a new isoform of Carbohydrate Responsive-Element Binding Protein and discovering a novel class of endogenous lipids with anti-diabetic and anti-inflammatory effects. His numerous publications include articles in high-impact journals, and is currently co-chair of the NIH Pathophysiology of Obesity and Metabolic Disease Study Section. In recognition of his scientific achievements, he was recently inducted into the American Society of Clinical Investigation. Committed to education, Dr. Herman teaches and mentors medical students, internal medicine residents, endocrine fellows, and research trainees. He has received multiple teaching awards and previously co-directed the Duke Scholars in Molecular Medicine Program. Alongside his administrative and research duties, Dr. Herman continues to practice clinically in endocrinology, diabetes, and lipid management.
